About

I created How to Draw Ebony Heroes to address the lack of Black representation in comics and anime. Many artists either don't know how to draw Black characters or avoid doing so out of fear of misrepresentation. This book provides a solution by offering a step-by-step guide to drawing Black heroes authentically, empowering artists of all backgrounds to create diverse, inclusive characters. It’s about ensuring that everyone can see themselves reflected in the stories that inspire us.

WIRE FRAMES

When it came to the page layouts, I wanted each chapter to have the same rhythm. Starting with the table of contents and introduction, I planned to include an image of an artist's work to excite the reader. After that, the chapter would dive into a paragraph followed by the lessons. This structure was designed to keep the reader engaged and create a smooth, consistent flow throughout the book.

LOGO

When it came to the logo, my first idea was to create a collection of books to make the edition aspect make sense. However, I ended up landing on a title that specifically explains the type of Ebony characters I would be drawing—heroes. Its a positive way to represent the community with a uplifting figure.

SKETCHES

The sketches were challenging but rewarding. I researched Black characters in anime and cartoons to ensure accurate representation. As an African American male, I felt personally responsible for how my community is portrayed, and the final designs reflect authentic Black features and cultural pride.

COLOR PALLETE

The color palette I chose is deeply rooted in earth tones, reflecting the richness of Black community culture. These shades symbolize growth, royalty, and new beginnings, drawing on the strength and resilience of ancestral ties. Each color is carefully selected to evoke a sense of heritage and empowerment, connecting the past with the promise of the future.

Fonts

For my book, I chose a font style that is clean and straightforward, prioritizing readability while still capturing the reader's attention. The design flows seamlessly from the header to the body, creating a smooth transition that enhances the overall reading experience. This balance between simplicity and visual appeal ensures the content is engaging without overwhelming the reader.

The content

Spreads

For the spreads, I aimed for an informal yet fun vibe, in keeping with the lighthearted nature of a drawing book. Each chapter opens with a piece of artwork submitted by a Black artist, showcasing their talent and perspective within the art community. This approach ensures that the community is not only represented but also given a voice, celebrating its diversity and creativity throughout the book.

Cover design

The cover initially started with just one character, but over time, I wanted to create something that would be not only eye-catching but also represent a wider range of identities. I decided to expand it to include three characters, each with their own unique traits. Then, I realized that multiple genders should be represented to reflect a more diverse and inclusive world, so I added a women alongside the three male ones.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL

Creating the promotional material turned out to be the easiest part of the process. It gave me a chance to showcase the characters I design in their full, finished form. Designing posters was an effective way to highlight the final results of the characters, especially after using the instructions from the book. I wanted to create visuals that not only displayed the designs but also captured the essence of each character.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this process has been a hefty one, but it taught me the importance of page balance and measurement. Ensuring that the text is consistent is also crucial. As an African American, I’m proud to be a part of the representation that my community has asked for. Being able to contribute to a solution for a significant issue makes this project truly worthwhile.
